Surrounding Area in Yangon
 Allied
War Memorial Cemetery
Located in Htaukkyant, 32 km from Yangon, on the way to
Bago. It has 27000 tombstones of Allied soldiers who
lost their lives in Myanmar during the World War 11. The
Cemetery is peaceful and beautiful tended.
Thanlyin
The ancient port city of Thanlyin is situated on the
left side of Yangon River and about 30 minutes drive
from Yangon. It is known as a major port and trade
centre in the 11th century under the Portuguese. Places
of interest are the large Golden Kyaik Khauk Pagoda,
Yelae Pagoda and old Portuguese buildings.
Twante
A small town on the Twante Canal is two hours boat ride
from Yangon. Pottery is major cottage industry in Twante.
Shwesandaw Pagoda, local town market and fish markets
are interesting sites and a chance to see rural life
along the Canal.
Pyay
(Prome)
Pyay is only 285 km north of Yangon situated on the
eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River on a lovely
location. Sites of interest included; Shwesandaw Pagoda,
Saehtetgyi Pagoda, Baw Baw Gyi & Be Be Gyi Pagoda,
Payama Pagoda, Shwedaung Pagoda, the ancient ruins of
Thayekhittaya and Hmawza known as Sri Ksetra.
Ahkauktaung; beautiful Buddha Images carved in the banks
of rock along the river.
Bago
Bago,
the capital of Mon people is just 80 km north of Yangon.
This ancient town makes a popular day trip by car. The
rice paddy fields are on the way and Bago is well known
for its Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha Image, Shwemawdaw
Pagoda, Kyakhatwine Monastery, Kanbawzathardi Palace,
Orphange school, Mon weaving industry, Local market and
Kyaikpun Four Huge Sitting Buddha Image.
Kyaikhtiyo
(Golden Rock)
Kyaikhtiyo
Pagoda, also known as the Golden Rock among the foreign
visitors is located about 170 km from Yangon. This
mystical pagoda stands on a gold gilded boulder,
precariously perched on the edge of the hill over 1100 m
above sea level. Our coach has to stop at Kinpun base
camp. From there we have to take open truck which is
normally used for hilly track up to the hermit "Yathae
Hill". And then we have to trek about one hour up to the
Golden Rock.
Mawlamyine
(Moulmein)
Mawlamyine, a charming town is the capital of Mon State,
situated at the mouth of the Thanlwin River. Located 270
km southeast of Yangon. Sites to see in Mawlamyine are
Win Sein Taw Ya Huge Reclining Buddha Image,
Kyaikthanlyan Pagoda, Caves of Kawgoon and Payone,
Mahamuni Pagoda, Uzina Pagoda and the Mon cultural
Museum. Nearby places of interest include; Setse beach,
Kyaikhami a seaside resort with its Yele Pagoda perched
over the sea.
Thanbyuzayat
Thanbyuzayat is about 34 km from Mawlamyine, an Allied
War Memorial Cemetery for the prisoners of war who lost
their lives in the building of the famous Death Railway
across the River Kwai.
