Surrounding Area in Mandalay
Ava
(Innwa)
Ava, another ancient capital is a just samll town and
the rice fields, the green scenery and the tranquility
make the excursion optimize. Nanmyint watch tower,
Mahaaungmye Bonzan Monastery, Bargaya Monastery and Ava
bridge are worth to visit.
Sagaing
Once an ancient capital, Sagaing lies 21 km south west
of Mandalay on the west bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River.
It is mostly known as a religious centre that supports
dozens of Buddhist monasteries and nunneries as well as
a major monastic hospital around sacred Sagaing Hill
including Soon U Ponya Shin pagoda, Kaungmudaw pagoda
and Ywahtaung village are must to visit.
 Mingun
Mingun located about 11km upriver from Mandaly on the
Western banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River. It is reached
after one hour boat trip from Mandalay and a town well
known for its Mingun pagoda, Mingun Bell, Myatheindan
pagoda and Settawya pagoda.
Pyin
Oo Lwin (May Myo)
Pyin
Oo Lwin is a popular get away town, just 66 km East of
Mandalay. Formely a British hill station located in the
Shan hills at 1070 metre above sea level. This town is
pleasantly cool and a relief from thr heat of the
plains. Local market, Botanical Garden, Pwekauk
Waterfall and Peikchinmyaung Cave are highlights.
Monywa
A
lovely town situated on the Eastern bank of the Chindwin
river, Monywa is 136 km and about 3 hours drive from
Mandalay. It is a major trade centre for agricultural
produce from the Surrounding Chindwin Valley.
Thanbuddhay pagoda, Botithaung, Kyaukka lacquerware
production village, Po Win Taung are its major tour
attraction.
Hsipaw
Hsipaw is situated on the road and rails routes between
Mandalay and Lashio. Hsipaw's market is best in morning
when Shan and other tribal people from nearby villages
come to trade. Dokehtawaddy river just East of the
market is cool and clear. It offers optional trekking to
explore the hill tribes.
Lashio
Lashio is the trading centre for Northern Shan State at
the beginning of the famous Burma road leading into the
Yunan Province. It is very unique with the witness of
the wonderful Gokehteik viaduct. Chinese Temple, local
market, hot spring are among some of the places to
visit.
Muse
Muse can be reached by car about 5 hours driving from
Lashio. Day return trip to Shweli, border town of China
would also be optional interesting. The Shweli river
forms the border between Myanmar's Shan State and
China's Yunan Province at Muse.
